Linda Chavez: Campaigning for her "Raza"

Linda Chavez said in one essay that her family has been in the United States since shortly after the Revolutionary War. Here she is, campaigning against Americans for Mexicans, based on the most dubious illogic I've ever seen. Looks like blood is a lot thicker than culture...

One can choose one's allegiances just as one can choose one's culture. Linda has made a choice, however counterproductive we feel that choice may be.

You can choose culture? I tho't culture basically continually evolved with influxes of immigrates and changes in social mores, etc. I can choose my personal culture and can contribute to the overall culture but I don't think national culture is 'chosen.' If you can choose culture, I choose the culture of American circa 1963. You can choose to interact with the dominate culture but I don't think you can choose what that dominate culture is. Ms Chavez is disingenuous toward the end of the skit with her reference to the Amnesty bill when she asked had the bill passed would there be a problem with the now legal immigrants. She knows full well that the problem would still exist except the people creating the problems would be "American citizens." I don't feel her choice is counterproductive but I think it is. I do think as PR states that blood is thicker than water, at least in this case.

I'm just calling it what it is. Look at some of the books she's written. She still sees herself as a Mexican or chicano, or hispanic, or whatever, if you ask me. If this is the best we can do assimilating Mexicans, or if this is the best they assimilate, oh boy.

It's clearly not the "best they can assimilate" and I'm fairly sure that on some level you know that. Why in the world would you generalize from one controversial political figure to an entire population?

I'm pretty convinced that, even though Chavez is exceptional in terms of her accomplishments, she's typical in terms of her loyalties amongst Mexican Americans. I've documented this plenty of other places here, but if you're ever in doubt, just ask a Mexican. I'll never forget the villification of Jessica Alba for telling some idiotic Spanish magazine that she was just an American.

Not to be a jerk, but the plural of anecdote is not data.

Do you have any valid research findings to support this rather disturbing claim? It's pretty scary if true.

Does anyone here have SPSS?

Just so happens that I DO have SPSS. :D
