Bishop Nazir Ali on Britishness and the Judeo Christian Tradtion

(h/t Gates of Vienna)

Full text here.
While some acknowledge the debt which Britain owes to the Judaeo-Christian tradition, they claim also that the values derived from it are now free-standing and that they can also be derived from other world-views. As to them being free-standing, the danger, rather, is that we are living on past capital which is showing increasing signs of being exhausted. Values and virtues by which we live require what Bishop Lesslie Newbigin called “plausibility structures” for their continuing credibility. They cannot indefinitely exist in a vacuum.

"Living on past capital" or "borrowed capital" as modern Reformed scholars say. But for how long?

read not long ago, that the younger generation in Iraq are turning to secularism which I thought was a good thing compared to Jihad and by extension our security. However, what would middle east atheism look like, by that I mean what "capital" are they borrowing from? If its western in any sense it must be from watching our media/culture which the islamist hate so much.

maybe its some form of grace too?

I've encountered this. It's much better than the alternative.

so are they borrowing some form of Reformation Capital, communicated by Western Secularlist in our media/hollywood through TV, Music, etc?

my hope is if they accept market economies and free enterprise some, it will eventually lead them to a Christian faith...might be too much to hope for though

No. They're made in the image of God and have a conscience, so they just live by their conscience. "When the Greeks by nature do the things required by the Law, they are a law unto themselves."

Pretty much everyone could live this way and society could more or less get along. It's just that Islam calls good evil and evil good.

true, theres always been a special brand of evil out there that can not be reasoned with. Some people do not understand that, worse many secularist dont beleive in good and evil.

This is replacement theology, pure and simple.

OT/ the NRO interview with Andrew McCarthy on his book Willful Blindness, which gets into Jihad and the legal challenges.

IMO, this is a book that should be given to these Christians who are against things like the PA and Terrorist Survellience on some philosophical ground of theirs. Seems like a must read to me for alot of reasons
